Stayed up to 1:00 AM this morning to start capturing a supernova in a galaxy far, far away (SN2024gy in NGC4216) using the Seestar S50 smart telescope. Discovered by an astronomer January 4 2024 and now fading. The host galaxy is 55 million light-years away - so the photons captured by my backyard telescope started their journey around the time dinosaurs became extinct. The other two galaxies are around the same distance.

Galaxy NGC 4216 with Supernova SN2024gy |
Suffice to say - mind blown... (Note: the supernova is the white dot at the top of the galaxy pointed to)
